The Network for a Healthy California—Northcoast Region

To improve local coordination and implementation of nutrition education programs, the Regional Network (RN) was developed by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), Cancer Prevention and Nutrition Section (CPNS)The RNN grant was made possible through funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Stamp Program1.

The Goals of the Network are to:

v    Increase daily consumption of fruits and vegetables to the recommended amount (My Pyramid)
v    Increase daily physical activity (Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans)
v    Decrease food insecurity
v    Decrease chronic disease

Eleven regions throughout California received RNN grants. The Northcoast Region consists of six counties (Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake, Mendocino, Napa, and Sonoma). The California HealthCollaborative plays an active role as the RNN lead agency for the Northcoast Region, responsible for coordinating and supporting Network funded projects and developing partnerships and collaborations to help low-income populations adopt healthy eating and physically active lifestyles in their communities.

Minigrant Program:

When sufficient funding is available, the Northcoast Nutrition & Fitness Collaborative (NNFC), in conjunction with the California Health Collaborative, seeks applications from organizations interested in increasing fruit and vegetable consumption, physical activity, and access to healthy food among Food Stamp eligible populations (at or below 185% of the FPL) in Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, Lake, Napa, and Sonoma Counties. The Network’s Northcoast Regional staff serves as the fiscal agent and provides mini-grants in the range of $500 to $5,000 to successful applicants.

Projects must provide education to improve nutrition, fitness and/or access to healthy food for Food Stamp eligible North Coast residents. All projects must include a direct nutrition education component. Agencies who do not receive Network for a Healthy California funds will receive priority.

The Network for a Healthy California - Children's Power Play! Campaign:

The Network for a Healthy California - Children's Power Play! Campaign is a statewide social marketing campaign that encourages 9- to 11-year-old children to eat the recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables and be active for 60 minutes every day. Community coalitions work together to create environments in which children are taught to make healthful food choices and be physically active, and are provided with the opportunities in which practicing these behaviors is both easy and socially acceptable.
Program Strategies:
The Power Play! Campaign helps communities throughout California bring the nutrition and physical activity messages to children through:
    • School classrooms and cafeterias
    • Community youth organizations, including after-school and summer programs
    • Farmers' market, supermarket and restaurant promotions
    • Media activities, including television advertisements and public relations

The Network for a Healthy California - Retail Program:

The Network for a Healthy California - Retail Program partners neighborhood stores with community health agencies to help increase the consumption and purchase of fruits and vegetables among low-income Californians. The Retail Program provides retailers statewide with a unique variety of tools, resources and outreach activities to inspire healthy change among consumers.

Physical Activity Integration:

Physical Activity Specialists (PA Specialists) were established by the Regional Nutrition Network to integrate physical activity into nutrition education activities and programs.

The PA Specialists are charged with the task of integrating physical activity into all Network-funded nutrition education efforts and programs that work with the Regional Nutrition Networks, The California Fruit and Vegetables Campaigns, Local Incentive Award Programs, Faith-based programs, Food Security Initiatives, and other Special Projects.
