Network for a Healthy California – Children’s Power Play! Campaign

 ~ State Site

The Children's Power Play! Campaign encourages 9-11 year-old children and their families to eat more fruits and vegetables and get 60 minutes of physical activity every day. The program provides information through schools, community youth organizations, supermarkets, food services, and the media. The Children's Power Play! Campaign is funded by USDA and provides free resources and materials to schools and after school programs where 50% or more of the students are enrolled in Free and Reduced-price meal programs. All others may still use the free resources by accessing the Children’s Power Play! Campaign.

Children's Power Play Evaluation:

The Network for a Healthy California — Children's Power Play! Campaign model was developed through careful formative research and proven effective through a large-scale evaluation study. The Children's Power Play! Campaign conducts process evaluation on an ongoing basis and uses data from the biennial California Children’s Health Eating and Exercise Practices Survey to continue to assess its effectiveness.  Information on the Research and Evaluation can be found at:

Campaign activities that complement the Sugar Savvy Tools. Not only do you have multiple lessons on rethinking your drink, you also have the additional Children’s Power Play! activities designed for 9-11 year olds. However anyone can use the Children’s Power Play! activities by adapting the activities for your specific target population. If you need more information on how to adapt the Children’s Power Play! activities to your age group, please contact the Regional Children’s Power Play! Office at (707) 543-5810 x204. The “GO FARTHER” sections of the activities have a variety of extended ideas and suggestions to support the Sugar Savvy Lessons including:

  • Organize a student poster contest. Have a local celebrity or elected official judge the posters.
  • Have your children write a story about rethinking their drink. Include your favorite story in the school newsletter.
  • Encourage families to track the amount of healthy drinks they consume over a week.
